|
While almost everyone can feel anxious from time to time, some people experience anxiety so often and/or so strongly that it can affect their everyday lives. Often people confuse anxiety disorders with stress. Stress is a normal reaction to a situation where a person feels under pressure. For example, it's common for people to feel stressed or uptight when meeting work deadlines, sitting exams or speaking in front of a group of people. However, for some people these feelings are ongoing, happen for no apparent reason or continue after the stressful event has passed. This is often what differentiates stress from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are the single most common mental health concern in Australia today. Nearly one in 10 people will experience some type of anxiety disorder in any one year. One in four people will experience an anxiety disorder at some stage of their lives. There are several different types of anxiety disorders that may require treatment through counselling, psychotherapy, medication or a combination of all three. Some of the more common anxiety disorders are as follows: 1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) 2. Panic Disorder 3. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) 4. Phobias a) Agoraphobia b) Social Phobia / Social Anxiety 5. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder If you feel that you or someone you know requires assistance coping with or managing an anxiety disorder, feel free to contact Counselling and Therapy Associates to discuss treatment and counselling options today. |
