Generalised Anxiety

People with Generalised Anxiety Discorder (GAD) experience their particular manifestation of anxiety as a consistent chronic pattern of worry or distress. Generally, they worry about real issues such as finances, illness or family problems – however the distress they experience often appears out of proportion to the precipitating event.
People who have GAD feel anxious on most days for at least six months. Their anxiety can manifest physically, mentally or both. Some of the more common manifestations include

  • Feeling irritable, edgy or restless
  • Physical and emotional tiredness
  • Difficulties maintaining concentration
  • Muscle tension (sore back, neck or jaw, headache)
  • Difficulties falling or staying asleep

GAD affects approximately 5 per cent of people in Australia at some time in their lives.
